Online courses (e.g. in software development) often allow for a student to digest it passively "by simply watching the lectures and getting the certificate", but the student could get more out of it by:
- building projects and maintaining them
- seeking alternative angles and opinions
- internalizing (rather than memorizing) the content
- strengthening meaning (e.g. through analogies) out of topics when "they sound boring"
Of course, a course doesn't need to "make students go through all that" ... as it is up to the student to make a course that much more meaningful!
