Tycka om

"Tycka om" in Swedish, idiomatically translates to "to like" in English.

However, when we look at what each word means, we can get some insight about what it means to "like" something:

• tycka = "to think"
• om = "about"

That's literally what "tycka om" means! So, "to like" something means "to think about" something, which kind of makes sense ... compare:

• "I like football" and "I think about football [all the time]"
• "I like her" and "I think about her [all the time]"

We really take for granted how things get expressed in our own languages and how other languages might "think outside the box" or "not think about the box" (see what I did there?) when it comes to phrasing!
